Arterial Hemodynamic Studies
Our primary mission as Circulation Specialists is to help you achieve the healthiest circulation possible for your stage in life.
Whatever your lifestyle, genetic predisposition or individual health aspirations – Your Circulation is your Lifeline.
These studies look for the presence of occlusive arterial disease in the legs and feet from atherosclerosis and diabetes. The studies include
Peripheral arterial hemodynamic study (PAHS, or segmental arterial pressures)
- This study (graph shown below) assesses arterial systolic pressure non-invasively in various segments of the leg as well as in the feet. It provides an accurate functional evaluation of where the stenoses and occlusions in the artery are and how significantly they affect arterial flow to the leg.
Ankle and Toe Brachial index (ABI/TBI)
- This study assesses pressures at the ankle, foot and toes 1,3 and 5 to provide a global view of blood flow across a foot.
- The test is particularly used to assess severity and follow up diabetic arterial disease and forms a part of a Diabetic foot screen.
Patient Preparation
No strenuous physical activity or stress test 30 minutes prior to examination.
Arterial hemodynamic studies - What will happen during the examination?
You will be lying down on a couch with your heels supported to keep your legs slightly raised off the couch.
Multiple blood pressure cuffs will be placed on your arms, thighs, ankles and 1 to 3 toes. The toes will also have small clip sensors (PPG) and Doppler probes will be used to measure blood pressure at various levels of your arterial tree.
The test graphs will then help determine the various levels at which the arteries in you leg are blocked and how functionally severe those blockages may be.
