This study helps determine what the cause of erectile dysfunction is likely to be.
- The study involves the measurement of arterial blood flow (systolic and diastolic) as well as pressures in the arteries of the penis after the induction of a medical erection with a test dose of Alprostadil.
- The presence of proximal or distal arterial occlusive disease, low penile nitric oxide activity, high venous leakage as well a neurogenic or psychogenic cause for the ED can be determined.
- Penile brachial pressure indices and pulse volume recordings as well as systolic and diastolic velocities are measured.
- This allows treatment to be carefully tailored to the cause.
Patient Preparation
If you are on any medication for ED, please omit it for 48 hours.
It is possible that you may have a prolonged erection after the test lasting even up to 2 hours, so ensure that you wear loose fitting trousers and take 3-4 hours off any other personal commitments.
What will happen during the examination?
You will first have a detailed consultation with our senior vascular surgeon, who will perform the test himself in complete privacy.
For the test, you will lie on your back as special blood pressure cuffs are applied to your arm, right thumb and penis. Further sensors are applied on your thumb as well.
You will then be given a small injection of Alprostadil via a very fine injection to induce a medical erection. Measurements are then made of various blood pressure and flow values.
The test and consultation can take up to 1 hour.
