Duplex ultrasound is the first imaging modality in the investigation of pelvic venous disorders (pelvic congestion syndrome). This condition is characterized by chronic pelvic pain that gets aggravated on prolonged standing, postural changes, pre-menstrually and after intercourse.
The combination of transabdominal and transvaginal approach allows an accurate diagnosis of uterine and ovarian plexus congestion and source of venous hypertension to be made. Other gynaecological pathology can also be ruled out in this study.
Report will include
- Pelvic morphology assessment
- Identification of ovarian vein reflux
- Assessment for urethral and rectal involvement
- Venous-arterial flow index (VAFI)
- Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of pelvic varicosities
- Rule out Nut-cracker syndrome & Non-thrombotic iliac lesion (May Thurner Syndrome)
Preparing for the scan
No food for 6 hours. Drink 500mls of water one hour before your appointment and try not to empty your bladder.
What will happen during the examination?
Transabdominal scan is performed first followed by a transvaginal (internal) scan. A sterile covered probed being introduced a short distance into the vagina to view the uterus and ovarian vasculature. This is simple and safe.
Transvaginal scans are not performed on those who have not been sexually active. Please let the sonographer know if the vaginal scan is not appropriate for you.
This scan will take up to 1 hour.
